The Great Commandment

What does it mean to be a Christian?  What kind of behavior comes to mind when we think about Jesus Christ?  The preceding questions are inseparable because to

be Christian is to seek to be like Christ.  What then was Christ like?

Jesus Christ is the only person in human history that fulfilled perfectly the two great commandments, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:38-39. In these two commands is a perfect description of the behavior of the God/man Jesus Christ.

When the Apostle Paul wrote to the believers at Philippi and his concern about them, which was reflected in Timothy, he made this disturbing comment, “For there is no one here like him who will readily demonstrate his deep concern for you. Others are busy with their own concerns, not those of Jesus Christ” Philippians 2:21. To be truly Christian and fulfill the law of Christ we must love others as ourselves, unlike churches that are filled with people who are only self-seeking?

After many years of discontent in churches where love was a dream and not a present reality, I have come to settle into a Christian environment that I can say without fear of contradiction is truly loving.  It is the church that is meant to display the glory of Christ, and this God does by transforming self-centered sinners into unselfish givers.

I hope, if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you have a church home that reflects well the sacrificial death of Christ for sinners through the lives of those who imitate Him well.
