The Uniqueness of the Bible
There is no book misunderstood more than the Bible; there is no greater book than the Bible. It took approximately 1,200 years to write, by over forty different authors in three different languages. Nevertheless, there is no book more unified, where every part perfectly compliments and fits uniquely into every other part.
There is no book on earth that contains hundreds of prophecies, many of which have already been fulfilled accurately. The prophecies are often fulfilled hundreds of years later. Such prophecies are time, place, and person specific. In short, the Bible is a miraculous book, which is exactly what we would expect from a book that consistently says, “Thus saith the LORD.”
The Difficulty in Reading the Bible
No book has been printed more than the Bible, nor has been owned by more people, and yet left unread or misunderstood. The reason for such great misunderstanding of a book that has been written perfectly is given in the scriptures itself. “But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.” 1 Corinthians 2:14
It is always difficult to understand something that on the surface seems ridiculous, outlandish, or just plain foolish. So it is with the Bible, men who ridicule God will ridicule His word. Men who are merely religious and do not know God personally will naturally have great difficulty understanding what He has said.
The Necessary Element to Understand the Bible
The thing that keeps people from rightly understanding what God has said is unbelief. The first thing necessary to understanding what God means by what He wrote is faith. “And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6
Please take special note that the previous verse focuses on a person, not a teaching, or an institution. In His holy Word God is referred to as a person. Without faith it is impossible to please Him (person), for he who comes to God (person) must believe that He (person) is and that He (person) is a rewarder of those who seek Him (person).” Without the relationship that was ruined when the first man (Adam) sinned, being restored at the cross through Jesus God’s Son, the words of God’s book will be garbled, unclear, and impossible to understand as He intended.
